the quiet girl - movie reviews

Colm Bairéad - IMDb

The Review by Zazi & Gabrielle

« The Quiet Girl » is a movie that we watched all together at the Katorza, during the “Festival Univerciné Britannique”. The movie was filmed in Dublin and County Meath, made by Colm Bairéad. It stares Catherine Clinch, Carrie Crowley and Andrew Bennett.

The film talks about a timid little girl, Cait, who is sent away from her flawed family to her aunt and uncle's farm for the summer holidays. In a house where lies must not be told, Cait discovers one. The film takes place in rural Ireland in 1981.

Over all, we agreed that the film was deeply moving, beautiful, intriguing but a bit long, slow and didn't have enough action. It was an enjoyable experience to listen to a language we are not used too.

SPOILER

At the end of the movie, after being dropped off back home, Cait runs after her aunt and uncle once they leave. She jumps into her uncles arms, embracing a big hug between each other.

During the scene just before, Cait fall into some sort of well. We were all at the edge of our seats, expecting her to die, exactly like a boy did before her. However, she managed to survive the fall.

We were told that we could count on our hands the number of films with an Irish Gaelic script, so in a way we felt as if it was an honor to watch one of those few films. Most of us, thought the ending could have been different or even improved, more dramatic.

Opinion about the movie by Lily & Lily-Rose

Many people found this film very interesting and well built. It tells a beautiful story.. Moreover the actors act very well, especially the little girl played by Catherine Clinch. The filmed images are beautiful and moving.

However, other people found this film very long with a slow rhythm. The few actions there were, were repetitive and too precise. At certain times, we could remain confused because the film was sometimes not very comprehensive.

To conclude, this movie is good but long.
